In today's stirred up life in the region and the world, loaded with problems, in which political negotiations and ethnic attitudes decide the fate of individuals and nations, the minority question has until now not (effectively) had its say in the Hungarian art scene. The writing of art history has fallen silent - with all due respect to the exceptions - on the traditional questions of the correlations between existence and art, culture and cultures in Central Europe.
With our exhibition, we have raised simple questions: Do the living conditions and institutions of ethnic groups living in minority status allow for the birth of art today in their circles? Is that which is born in the minority as art, according to the minority interpretation - art? And is it able to appear as art, and can it be public in minority or majority culture, or in each case, in universal culture or that of the homeland?
The concept of the exhibition is concentrated around three principal themes: firstly, taking into consideration issues tied to the mother nation or diverging from the majority nationality in the case of ethnic minorities in the Carpathian Basin; secondly, focusing on the appearance and significance of dual identities; and thirdly, presenting artworks reflecting upon minority issues and questions of identity.
