Aristocrat artists during the rise of the bourgeoisie in Hungary (1840-1940)

Aristocrats were not only patrons of the arts but also took part in Hungary's artistic life as artists. This is connected to an advance in the status of art and to the rise of the bourgeoisie in the 19th and 20th centuries. The exhibition represents a stage in the research and rediscovery of such work where the aim was to put it on show in museums in Hungary. The result of this work is that besides the few aristocrat artists known up to now (Baron László Mednyánszky, Count Gylua Batthyány, Baron Ferenc Hatvany), about forty artists can now be viewed by the public. Among others, members of the Apponyi, Bánffy, Lónyai, Pálffy, Pongrácz, Teleki and Zichy families are represented in the exhibition.
