Recent Paintings of Tibor Csernus

After the Etchings of William Hogarth´s The Harlot´s Progress (1731)

Curated by Éva Gelencsér Rothman Tibor Csernus graduated from the Hungarian Academy of Fine Art, where he studied under Aurel Bernath. From the late fifties and early sixties he founded the Hungarian surnaturalist movement and became its leader. In 1964 he immigrated to Paris. His paintings from the late seventies built on strong light and shadow contrasts brought him international fame. He was awarded with the Kossuth prize in 1997. This exhibition in the Mucsarnok is a retrospective of his work made between 1996 and 1998 and, among others, is trying to answer the questions of how -by following the artistic methodology of Caravaggio, Rembrandt and Georges de La Tour - it is possible to change the role of light and shadow contrasts in compositions within the new context of various other colors or where and how to use different emphases to produce a new effect.
