Inventory - Images from Transylvania 1967 - 1998

Photography exhibition pf Péter Korniss

Curated by Krisztina Jerger 1967-1998. Two years that are both beginning and end; in between there are more than thirty years. For me these were peculiar years - years that I spent traveling in Transylvania and found villages where traditional peasant life was still almost untouched and then later was witness to the changes that will inevitably cause deep changes in the rural life of this area even in the near future. This was the period when I made the images in this exhibition. I have been to both Rumanian as well as Hungarian villages which as late as the late eighties (which for Europe is remarkably late) preserved most of the traditional features of peasant culture such as customs of ordinary life, costumes, music and dance. Above all places there remained a sense of community that still kept people together. Everything I recorded and made visible by means of the camera there has a special importance for me. This exhibition is of images that for me show what I would have liked to preserve as they were in the period between the years 1967 and 1998 in Transylvania.
