Cartographers

Artists and Map

Curated by Andrea Regos This exhibition presents an artistic approach towards cartography from a broad range of perspectives irrespective of material or subject, allowing different approaches whether it is the re-appropriation or the deep analysis of the idea of the map. The concept for the exhibition was conceived in Zagreb, but will be shown in Budapest, Maribor and Warsaw. This exhibition represents a unique example of an European cultural project that involves the contribution of sixty-seven artists from every area of the world and the essays of nine theorists that jointly describe this artistic phenomenon of globalization within the twentieth century. This exhibition takes the viewer into imaginary landscapes. The conceptual bases are to be found in scientific cartography and its starting point: the map-projection. The primary focus of scientific cartography is the known facts: strange formations or bizarre landscapes can only be found on its fringes. Imaginary cartography begins where science ends, the symbol of Atlantis for example. By means of imaginary cartography, like Alice in Wonderland with her looking glass, we can map unknown lands, islands and continents as well as discover invisible universes existing besides each other. The exhibition is supplemented with a selection by Annamária Szoke concerning the diagrams used by the Hungarian artists.
